However, these two virtualization technologies differ in how they approach virtualization, isolation, resource management, and the kinds of operating systems they support. Virtualization Methodology

Each virtual machine (VM) on a KVM virtual private server (VPS) runs as if it were a distinct physical computer, thanks to full hardware-assisted virtualization. Various operating systems, including various Linux distributions and non-Linux systems like Windows, can be operated using KVM. With tight isolation, each VM runs its own kernel.

OpenVZ uses operating system-level virtualization, also referred to as container-based virtualization. OpenVZ runs a single shared kernel across all containers as opposed to numerous independent kernels. Due to its lower overhead, this method may provide greater performance, although it has some OS compatibility restrictions.

Isolation:

KVM offers better isolation between virtual machines because each one runs on a separate kernel and set of resources. Because of this, KVM works well in situations where tight isolation is important.

Compared to KVM, OpenVZ containers may offer a significantly lesser degree of isolation because they share the host's kernel. Although OpenVZ offers good resource efficiency, it might not be as appropriate for applications needing high levels of isolation.
